Are Wrinkles Genetic?

July 3, 2020 by drcasad

Older woman smiling after skin therapy. Over the years, your appearance naturally changes. Besides a few gray hairs, you’ll also notice wrinkles and fine lines. Although everyone has a few appear as they age, have you ever noticed that even people who are of the same age can have a vastly different amount of wrinkles? While there are many factors that contribute to their development, research shows genetics can also play a role in

your skin’s elasticity over time. Fortunately, skin therapy can help slow the signs of aging.

Do Genetics Cause Wrinkles?

As you age, your skin naturally loses moisture and elasticity, which causes wrinkles and fine lines. There are certain factors known to increase their presence, such as sun damage, smoking, or a poor diet. Although they are leading contributors to a decrease in collagen and elastin fibers, genetics can also make you more prone to wrinkles.

The natural process your body goes through over the years is called intrinsic aging. It varies from person to person based on genetics and your body’s natural internal processes. There are certain hereditary factors that can lead to premature aging, such as fragile skin and an inability to generate collagen. Research shows that variants in the MMP1 and STXBP5L genes are associated with an increased risk of developing wrinkles.

Can I Stop Wrinkles from Developing?

Unfortunately, you can’t change your genetics, but there are several things you can do to reduce the prominence of wrinkles, like developing good lifestyle habits. You can help prevent the signs of aging by keeping a few tips in mind:

  • Protect your skin from sun damage by limiting the time you spend outside. When you do venture out, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, like hats or sunglasses.
  • Moisturizing regularly prevents dry skin, which causes your cells to shrivel, which can cause wrinkles and fine lines. Moisturizing traps water in your skin to keep your cells plump to mask tiny lines and creases.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco. This prevents wrinkles while also preserving your skin tone and texture.
  • Healthy skin starts from the inside out, which is why it’s important to eat a healthy diet that contains plenty of lean proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Can Skin Therapy Help?

In addition to changes to your lifestyle at home, there are several elective treatments to help improve your skin and combat the signs of aging, like wrinkle reducers or dermal fillers. A customized plan will turn back the clock to restore a smooth, youthful appearance.
