What Causes Varicose Veins?

November 10, 2020 by drcasad

Consultation for vein therapy in Dallas.Over the years, you anticipate a few wrinkles or gray hairs; however, you probably don’t expect to see varicose veins. Unfortunately, they are a normal part of the aging process, especially for people who stand or walk often. As the veins bulge and twist around, they can be more visible through your skin. You don’t need to be embarrassed by them.  You can wear shorts with confidence after undergoing vein therapy in Dallas.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are those that are enlarged and often look twisted. They commonly occur on the legs because standing and walking increase the pressure on the veins in the lower extremities. Many people also develop spider veins, which are a mild variation of those that are varicose. Often, they are only an aesthetic issue; however, for some people, varicose veins can lead to discomfort. In severe cases, ulcers, blood clots, or bleeding can occur.

What are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Most varicose veins are dark purple or blue in appearance. They may look like twisted or bulging cords under the surface of your skin. For some patients, they can experience an achy or heavy sensation in their legs. They may even develop burning, throbbing, muscle cramps, and swelling in the legs. Symptoms can worsen after sitting or standing for a prolonged time, such as itching near the veins. Over time, your skin may also discolor.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins result from weak or damaged valves that cause blood to flow backward instead of toward the heart. There are muscle contractions in your legs that act as pumps to allow blood to return to your heart, but the damaged cells cause the valves to leak, allowing it to pool in the vein.

Anyone can develop varicose veins, but there are certain risk factors that increase your likeliness, including:

  • Age
  • Being female
  • Pregnancy
  • Family history
  • Obesity
  • Occupations that require prolonged sitting or standing

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

Sclerotherapy is a revolutionary treatment to significantly improve or eliminate the appearance of small varicose veins. A special solution is injected into the vein to cause swelling that restricts blood flow. The vein will collapse, allowing it to shrink. It will be naturally absorbed by the body over the next several weeks to diminish its visibility.

The noninvasive treatment doesn’t involve any pain other than the initial injection. You can resume normal activities the same day, but you’ll need to wear compression stockings for 72 hours after your treatment. It’s also best to avoid any heavy lifting or pounding. You may experience some bruising, which will dissipate in a few days.

If you’re ready to show your legs again, you might be a candidate for vein therapy. Invest in a confident future with the right treatment plan.
